3D Enhanced concrete progress workflow

The Challenge

As part of customer requirements, progress reports must to be provided on a weekly basis for all concrete works. Due to the project complexity, construction teams had difficulty understanding the scope of work from the 2D layouts alone. In addition, collecting progress data using traditional manual methods took many hours and led to costly errors and delays in the reporting process.

The Solution

Our team used BIM technology to develop a robust system () to manage progress control processes (starting from data collection to verification, ending with data transfer back to office teams). Replacing traditional progress reporting with 3D enhanced workflow provided access to shared BIM content (models and information) for project teams. Additionally, 3D Pdf technology integration enabled teams to access 3D BIM models and understand the complex structure using easy-to-use pdf technology. Lastly, automating progress reporting process saved time and improved project team quality.

3D Enhanced envelope progress workflow

The Challenge

Therefore, construction teams were suffering to report the weekly progress for the envelop using traditional methods and 2D layouts only.

  • Employers Information Requirements (EIR)

The Employer's Information Requirements (EIR) are part of the BIM project tender documents to enable BIM suppliers to produce their initial BIM Execution Plan (BEP). EIR should be developed as early as possible (before designers and contractors appointed) by the employer or often by their BIM consultants.

  • 3D Modeling & Design Coordination

The core of BIM is building the 3D models for all phases of the project (design, construction and operation), which is usually indicated as Level of Development (LOD) 300-400. Using BIM software technology, the design is further checked for construct-ability issues that may cause delays, hinder construction and add to the costs of the client. The fully resolved BIM is then issued to consultants, contractors and owners and can be used as a reference for everyone in the project to speed up the process of visualizing the project and understanding how to build it and integrate the mechanical and electrical systems with the structure.

Once a 3D BIM is constructed, it can be further utilized to capture the changes in the project and provide “real-time” 3D view of the construction site to the consultants, contractors and owners. Anyone can see the designer and contractor changes consolidated in a single 3D model, thus ensuring that the design remains fully coordinated throughout the entire construction phase. This requires either a dedicated BIM coordinator on-site or a trained site engineer that can relay the instructions to a remote BIM team offsite.

BIM animated virtual tours are not like ordinary project walkthroughs. They allow the user to interact and walk around freely inside the building, and to click on objects and access the associated information (for example a door will show dimensions, type and material such as wood or metal).

  • Freedom to walk through the model or show a pre-recorded playback to clients. 

  • Get any information (size, type, material) instantly by clicking on any object. 

  • Share the model easily with anyone by email or USB. 

 

  • 4D Virtual Construction Simulation

We can create a simulation of the project construction on screen in order to help the planning engineers watch and validate their project schedule. Many problems in the sequence of activities of different trades (such as steel structure and HVAC) can be discovered that way and corrected at an early stage of the project.

  • 5D Accurate Quantities

With BIM technology, calculating material quantities in buildings is a time and cost-saving task. It can be highly automated by using an existing 3D model to extract the quantities, which allows changes to be calculated very quickly with less effort. Additionally, BIM quantities can be broken down and filtered by the project Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) such as Building/Floor/Zone/Room, and finally categorized according to international standards such as UniFormat/MasterFormat/RICS etc… 

 Advantages :

  • Calculating quantities is faster, more accurate and realistic with BIM. 

  • Clicking an object will show its quantity (volume, area, length. 

  • Quantities can be filtered by WBS. 

  • Errors are much less compared to traditional ways. 

  • Calculating design changes is very fast. 

 

  • 5D Cost Loading and forecasting

Contractors and clients may seek to know the forecasted or expected costs every upcoming month in order to anticipate expensive works. Using BIM software to make a 5D study of the project can project the monthly costs required in the contract according to the BoQ quantities, construction progress and Primavera schedule.
